The strange case of Rufus Duzeper and his coat of arms

See: www.ansteorra.org/regnum/herald/LoI/LoI-2000-04/2000-04-LoI.html re coat of arms from I think Texas?  It is kind of "fishy". Not clear what this is:

27) Rufus Duzeper Resubmitted name, new device.

Per pale engrailed azure and argent, a natural dolphin urinant argent and three escallops one and two azure.

New name. New device. Minor changes only. English language / culture is most important. Desired gender is male. Submission history: Name Connor Makinzie was returned by Laurel 4/99 for conflict with Connor MacKenzie reg
10/98.
Rufus: Withycombe p 260 under Rufus lists this name, undated. Bardsley p 243 under Dingley dates Rufus Rogers to 1598-9. Bardsley (p.243 s.n. Dingley) dates "Rufus Rogers" to 1598-9. Laurel decisions April, 1990 (Rufus Barbarossa) and February, 1994 (Rufus of Stamford) support use of Rufus as a given based on Rufus of Capua, honored as a martyr in the Sarum calendar and several 15th century monastic calendars.
Duzeper: Reaney & Wilson p 127 under Dashper dates Alb(e)ricus Duzeper
to 1221, William Duzeper to 1279, and Roger Duzeper to 1293.

"Gloria. Thanks for the intriguing piece on our ancestor. At first I thought you'd 'googled into' a witches coven by mistake, with a high priest called Laurel (who is on Email - very post modern!). Then it started to look like a legitimate research college for heraldic symbolism. So I googled their name Ansteorran and found  [ www.ansteorran.org ]. They are a huge bunch of recreationists calling themselves the Society for Creative Anachronism. They have their own date (starting from the year their society started), battles with rules, and it appears that they research characters to "be" in their kingdom. Looks like a Californian Dungeons and Dragons game except their parents never told them to stop in the 1980's.  They have created/ constructed a character based on our ancestor's name and may have a legitimate crest, or may have just made it up."

Another one of their little snippets on Rufus:

28. Rufus Duzeper (Wastelands)

Resubmitted name. Unpended device. Per pale engrailed azure and argent, a natural dolphin urinant argent and three escallops one and two azure.

  • [Device] We think it's "invected". We also think it's pretty landscapey, tho I think nobody said it was actually returnable (despite our best hopes, for we think it's pretty far from period style).
  • (post-meeting) Magnus

  • Laurel decisions April, 1990 (Rufus Barbarossa) and February, 1994 (Rufus of Stamford) support use of Rufus as a given based on Rufus of Capua, honored as a martyr in the Sarum calendar and several 15th century monastic calendars.
  • (post-meeting) Bordure

  • Bardsley p.243 sn Dingley dates "Rufus Rogers" to 1598-9.
  • 28. COLLEGE ACTION:

    Name: Forwarded to Laurel.

Device: Forwarded to Laurel reblazoned as "Per pale invected. " after a lot of discussion.

"Their FAQ in the site answers a lot of my questions/suspicions:"

Welcome to the on-line home of the Kingdom of Ansteorra of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. Ansteorra is composed of Oklahoma and Texas (except that part of Texas in the Mountain Time Zone). Here you will be able to find information about events and people in Ansteorra.

  • 1.1 What is the Rialto? What's it for?

The Rialto consists of a Usenet newsgroup, (rec.org.sca) which is propagated to thousands of machines world-wide, and an electronic mail digest (the SCA Digest), which is produced on a badly overworked machine at MIT, and mailed directly to hundreds of people, also world-wide. We are also connected to Fidonet and other BBS networks.

The Rialto exists to discuss topics of interest to the Society for Creative Anachronism. The SCA is a non-profit, educational organization of people that study the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and recreate those parts we find most interesting.

  • 1.2 Why is it called the Rialto?

The Rialto is named for a marketplace in Venice in the vicinity of the Rialto bridge. As people gathered there to gossip and exchange ideas, so do we gather here.

  • 3.1 What does AS stand for? Anno Societatis, or Year of the Society, counted from May 1, 1966 CE. (CE = Common Era, used to avoid the religious connotations of AD, or Anno Domini)
  •
  • 3.3 Why don't we have a badge for all the Rialto people to wear?

We have an informal agreement that a piece of netting worn on your person or hanging about your camp indicates you visit the Rialto. Remember there are people that have nets around that do *not* visit here.

  • 3.4 What is Period?

The period (and place) of interest to the SCA, as defined in Corpora and the By-Laws, is Western Europe and cultures that had contact with Western Europe before the 17th Century.

  • 3.5 What is the Grand Council?

The Grand Council is a body of 20-40 people, chartered by the Board of Directors to develop recommendations on improving the structures of the SCA, Inc. It is not a strictly representative body and has no power to legislate. Its membership has been chosen to represent as many different viewpoints on the SCA as possible. Major discussions are open for the public to read, see the listing for the Grand Council mailing list for details.

  • 4.1 What is Pennsic? When is Pennsic?

Pennsic is an annual war, with the main contenders being the East and Middle Kingdoms. It is the largest recurring event in the Laurel Kingdoms, with attendance in 1996 of just under 10,000. It has taken place since 1972, and has been held at Coopers Lake Campground near Slippery Rock, PA since 1977. The main battles of the war are held the third weekend in August, with other activities taking place the week and weekend preceding that. Pennsic was so named from "Pennsylvania" on the model of "Punic." More information can be found at http://www.pennsicwar.org

  • 4.2 What is Estrella? When is Estrella?

Estrella is an annual war between four Principle Kingdoms - Atenveldt, Artemisia, Caid and Outlands. They change allies each year at the treaty negotiations. It has taken place since 1985, and is held at Schnepf Farms near Queen Creek, Az. It is held on President's Day weekend (February). More information can be found at http://www.estrellawar.org

  • "Don't know where that leaves us (or our ancestor). Obviously some research has taken place, but is the crest made up or genuine?  You may be interested in pursuing this with an Email to their site, but for goodness sake don't mention the fairies on the Devon Moor - - it'll just get them excited!"

  • Reply from the Virtual Scribe For The Kingdom of Ansteorra Seneschal of Adlersruhe:

"The Coat-of-Arms for Rufus Duzeper is not a crest that is related to your family. Since the SCA is a Historical Re-enactment group we take on a persona in the of a person who could have lived within the time period that makes up the SCA. As part of this we compose names that could have been used in a particular time period. (In the modern world I am Dan Wheeler, computer programmer, webmaster living in Amarillo, Texas. Selwyn is a Late 15th century Norman now living in the Shire of Adlersruhe, Kingdom of Ansteorra.)

The Duzeper name is taken form a book by Reaney & Wilson and lists the following names: p 127 under Dashper dates Alb(e)ricus Duzeper to 1221, William Duzeper to 1279, and Roger Duzeper to 1293. We take the same liberties when creating a Coat-of-Arms for ourselves and are prohibited from using a "real" registered coat of arms for the family name we took. As I am not a herald I have no idea what the title of the Reaney & Wilson book is but if it would help in your search I will gladly track down the information.

For more information on the SCA you may again visit the Ansteorra Web (www.ansteorra.org) site.  If you are interested in the SCA and have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
