Gilbert Dashper: searching for the missing link

"Some time ago, an elderly relative gave us a scrap of information on the parents of my GGGrandfather Gilbert Dashper (b: 1810 of Tavistock). She thought that Gilbert was the son of Robert Cranford Dashper (b: 1764 of Dittersham), which would make him the brother of John Jacob Dashper (b:1794 of St Savior), however her dates were a little off. This piece of information is a major "missing link" for our family, and we would really value any information at all to do with this."

Update # (a) from Graeme Wallis of Coleraine, Australia, on 23/6/2000

I have an idea how we might be able to establish your ancestor Gilbert Dashper's paternity.

Gilbert appears in the 1851 census age 41 born Tavistock with his wife Susannah Ford born Devonport, living at Devonport.

Gilbert appears in the 1881 census age 71 born Devonport (?) with his wife Eliza born Ceniot, Cornwall living at Devonport.
Assuming this is the same Gilbert, it suggests that Susannah died between 1851 & 1881, and that Gilbert remarried to Eliza. Gilbert and Eliza's marriage certificate will reveal Gilbert's father's name. If his father's name is found to be William this would almost certainly prove Gilbert to be the elder son of William and Agnes.

Linda Etty has previously indicated that she has recorded many Dashper event reference numbers from St Catherine's index. I suggest that you contact her first to ascertain if she has any marriages for Gilbert Dashper between 1851 and 1881.

Update # (b) from Linda Etty of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on 23/6/2000

I have: 1874 Marriage Gilbert Dashper    Stoke Damerel    5B #542  April to June

Update # (c) from Mark Dashper of Hastings, New Zealand on 26/6/2000

Further research through St Catherine's Deaths Index reveals the following:

1873 Death ...Susannah Dashper ...Stoke Damerel ...5B# 255 ...January to March

X Files #1 Solved: with the arrival of the Marriage Certificate of Gilbert and Eliza for 9/4/1874, we find listed the father of Gilbert being William Dashper (Wheelwright). This is proof of another son to William and Agnes Dashper of Tavistock, and thereby disproves any link to Robert Cranford Dashper.
