Original gravesite of Private William John Dashper

Private William John Dashper's grave in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery at Armentieres, northern France. These wooden crosses were erected initially and replaced later by the marble headstones with which we are familiar.   "On a recent visit to Adelaide we noticed that several of these original timber crosses have been incorporated in the South Australian war memorial in North Terrace.   My wife and children and I visited the cemetery at Armentieres in 1985, I believe the only members of Uncle John's family to have done so.   After 85 years these photos have just come into my hands after being held all that time in the old Wallis family home, until recently occupied by my 87 year old bachelor uncle who now lives in an aged persons hostel. None of the family have previously seen these photos !   This proves that family historians should never give up hoping that one day some marvellous may turn up." (Graeme Wallis September 2001)
