Background information on Susannah Dashper

"Susannah was our great grandmother. Her only son Daniel was illegitimate and I don't know if we will ever find his father. We suspected Susannah died young and never married, but I stumbled upon her marriage to John Bayley in Tavistock (5B #644, A-J) in 1876. The only Susannah Bayley we found in the 1881 census fitted her age and place of birth, and that was in St Gluvias Cornwall as a widow with 3 of John's sons. Within the last month I received a copy of Susannah's mother's death certificate (Joanna Phillips Dashper) in Horndon, Devon in 1898 (which would indicate she returned to England around that period) . Susannah was the witness and she gave her name as Susannah Newcombe."

Update of information

"The mystery of Susannah Dashper has been solved for the time being. Shirley James (Durdan) obtained the marriage certificate of Susannah Dashper 1876 (5B#644).  The marriage was May 19, 1876 to JOSEPH NEWCOMBE  a farmer at Cudlipptown owned by his father James Newcombe.  Susannah lived at Lane End, Peter Tavy with her father William Dashper.  I believe (as we call it) there was a double ring ceremony.  When I found Susannah Dashper and then found John Bayley with the same registration number I assumed they married.  I think Susannah Dashper married Joseph Newcombe and John Bayley married ??? during the same ceremony accounting for the confusion."

I easily found Susannah and Joseph Newcombe on the 1881 census:

3 Back St. Bow, Devon
Joseph Newcombe             27            ag. labour     Exbourne Devon
Susannah Newcombe         30                                no place of birth given
William J. Newcombe          3 .............................. Jacobstowe, Devon
John                                     2................................Jacobstowe, Devon

You can imagine how thrilled we were to get this news.
